Colors Aloft

Author: Alexander Kent
Average review score:

Colours Aloft
The fragile peace between France and Britian was broken in 1803. During the Peace of Amies the British government ran down the fleet in number of ship and men while the French continued to build up their navy. In his last battle ViceAdmiral Sir Richard Bolitho had captured the French admiral Jobert's ship the Argonaute. Now Bolitho raises his flag at the foremast of this prize ship. He resumes command with only a few of his experienced crew. He is short of experienced seamen and has a reduced squadron. Bolitho is beset by depressing thoughts: problems at home with his wife who wants him to leave the sea and assume duty in London;doubts whether he will return from this combat; responsibility to lead his inexperienced crew to victory and safety. Hs main task is to catch the French if they break out of ports and destroy them in the Mediteranean. His prime enemy is Rear Admiral Jobert whose ship Bolitho now commands. He is a formidable wily enemy who is out for revenge. It will take all of Bolitho's skill and ingenuity to defeat him. Kent draws a vivid puicture of life in the British navy. The accounts of the battles are graphic and sirring. This reader had the sense of experiencing the events firsthand. The book is wellwritten;the characters finely drawn and human;the action swift. Highly recommenced for any reader of naval fiction....

Author: Yonah Alexander

Excellent book on combating terrorism
I thought that this book, an edited volume of experts from various countries on strategies to combat terrorism was done very well. The perspectives of (in-country) European, U.S., Latin American, Middle Eastern, and Asian analysts shows that terrorism is a global problem and there must be global solutions. The contributors also discuss the consequences of 9/11 so that adds to the helpfulness of the book.

Communazis: FBI Surveillance of German Emigre Writers

paranoid pursuits: the FBI against the refugees
As Hitler consolidated his grip on power in Germany during the 1930s, thousands of intellectuals, Jews, Communists, artists, and dissidents found themselves under increasing pressure to leave. As the Nazis filled the booming concentration camps with their various opponents, many of these justly frightened targets of Nazi repression fled Germany for safer harbors beyond the reach of Nazi influence or control. But as the decade progressed, the sphere of "safe harbors" diminished, and in a decade of Depression, xenophobia, and rising national chauvinism, these refugees faced hostility and suspicion nearly everywhere they went. Among these refugees were writers and poets like Thomas and Heinrich Mann, playwrights like Bertolt Brecht, scientists like Albert Einstein, and a wide range of others including people like Anna Seghers, Herbert Marcuse, and Theodore Adorno. Some of these refugees -- the lucky ones, in light of what happened to many of those who were forced to remain in Nazi Europe -- made it to the United States.

But the United States was also wrestling with a Depression; racism and anti-Semitism were facts of American life, and red scare paranoia already had developed a tradition in this country closely connected to anxieties about immigration and cultural modernism. However bright the intellects with which these refugees might be gifted, or however shining their intellectual and cultural achievements, they remained for J. Edgard Hoover and the FBI dangerously "Other", and therefore dangerous and suspicious. In this book Stephan documents the extensive surveillance, both legal and illegal, that the FBI pursued in attempting to identify the potential national security risk posed by these refugees, who after all were mostly from Germany, although in many cases they were Jews, Socialists, or Communists who had no sympathy with that detested and thuggish National Socialist regime. However, J. Edgar Hoover did not make much distinction between Nazis and Communists as far as the potential security threat was concerned; to Hoover, these refugees might be seen as "Communazis" -- thus the title. It is also depressing to see how some of these refugees turned on others, working as informants for the FBI, intensifying the web of suspicion and paranoia under which these hapless refugees were forced to exist.

As far as I am concerned, this extensive FBI surveillance of refugees and dissidents from a brutal, racist regime was both deplorable and useless (it is telling that Hoover saw the fact that many of these refugees were wanted by the German police as a mark against the refugees -- even if the police were the notorious Gestapo). But even if the reader does not share my view on this, the reader will find in the pages of Stephan's book highly informative. It is a useful documentation of the systematic national police surveillance of private individuals, which occurred as part of the development of the national security state apparatus that emerged during and after the Second World War. Whatever one's views of Hoover and the FBI, one will find this book a valuable addition to studies on domestic police surveillance against real or potential political dissent.

A Community of Readers: A Thematic Approach to Reading
Published in Paperback by Watson-Guptill Publications (February, 1997)
Authors: Roberta Alexander and Jan Lombardi
Average review score:

Beats hooked-on-phonics hands down!
As a recent immigrant from Congo, I had difficulties reading thematic based topics in the English language. I found myself struggling with eveerything from business memos to advanced topics in scientific literature (particle physics, nanotechnology etc.). My boss told me to either learn a thematic approach to the material or to find another job (or get another Ph.D). This is when I turned to 'A community of Readers'. I cannot begin to sing its praises without bursting into tears. I recommend it to all.

Complete Preludes and Etudes for Pianoforte Solo
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (December, 1973)
Authors: Alexander Scriabin, Y. I. Mil'shteyn, and K. N. Igumnov
Average review score:

Some of the greatest late Romantic piano solo works
Scriabin was a contemporary of Rachmaninoff, in fact, he studied under the same teacher. Like Rachmaninoff, he was a bridge composer between the late Romantic and the 20th Century period. He was far more modern, in fact, than Rachmaninoff, though his early works were profoundly influenced by Chopin (Rachmaninoff less so--he was influenced by Chopin but also Tchaikovsky.)

Despite the fact both composers shared Russian heritage and a love of the piano, Rachmaninoff did not admire Scriabin's works, saying he had gone off in a wrong direction. While I love Rachmaninoff's piano works intensely, I have to say that he was really wrong about Scriabin. This is some of the most gorgeous, introspective, Impressionist piano music ever written.

Scriabin had a tragically short life, yet he composed quite a number of etudes, preludes, sonatas and other short piano works. Dover has done a huge favor by putting all the preludes and etudes into a single volume. There is enough material here for years of exploration into the music of a piano master. The edition is a compact volume that manages to sit well on the piano music stand, and the music print is clear and easy to read.

Great stars make the sonnets shine
Ok, there is absoltuely NO denying the fact that Shakespeare is an awesome guy. Also, there is no denying that The Sonnets are gorgeous and intriguing. However, with the help of many FANTASTIC performers, there is NOW no denying that spoken sonnets are even better. Read by the stars, the sonnets have a new life to them- something inderscribable is added when they are read aloud by these voices. Kudos to (the one and only ) Brian Stokes Mitchell, who I particularly enjoyed, not only because I'm a huge fan of his, but because his voice lends itself extremely well to the words The Bard wrote. Great recording!

Complete Works of William Shakespeare: The Alexander Text (Collins Classics)
Published in Paperback by Trafalgar Square (April, 1997)
Authors: William Shakespeare, Peter Alexander, and Alexander Text
Average review score:

The Portable Bard
This is an edition of the complete works of Shakespeare that I keep next to my bed. No heavier than a large fashion magazine and absolutely readable, it is my favorite. The glossary is useful, the commentary is brief, and the cover folds back for comfortable beach reading. This edition brings Shakespeare into focus as an intimate whose work and life and suffering are not in any way distant from ours. Given the genius of the work, this particular edition encourages an easier relationship because the book itself is so easy to use.(When no one's around, pull it out and read a speech or two aloud) An excellent any-occasion gift that will be used and appreciated, especially by students, because it is so very convenient!
